Here’s more reason to love coffee and for those who want to lose weight. According to Health Magazine, a recent Spanish study, published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that:
…trained athletes who took in caffeine pre-exercise burned about 15% more calories for three hours post-exercise, compared to those who ingested a placebo. The dose that triggered the effect was 4.5 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. For 150-pound woman (68 kg), that’s roughly 300 mg of caffeine, the amount in about 12 ounces of brewed coffee, a quantity you may already be sipping each morning.
Comedian, Paul Gale gives us a hilarious insight into this phenomenon.
Delicious accompaniment to any coffee or tea!
Ingredients
- 100 g (3.5 oz) of pastry flour
- 120 g (4.2 oz) butter
- 100 g (3.5 oz) sugar
- 3 tablespoons bitter cocoa powder
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 sachet of baking powder
- 1 large cup of Lavazza ground coffee with very little sugar
- Milk
- Salt
Put the butter in the mixer at room temperature and add the sugar (keep 1 tablespoon of sugar) and blend at low-speed until the mixture is frothy. Add the lightly beaten eggs, flour, 2 level spoons of bitter cocoa powder and a pinch of salt. Add 2 spoons of milk followed by the baking powder. Pour the mixture into a buttered oven dish, sprinkle uniformly with a mixture obtained by mixing 1 spoonful of cocoa and 1 of sugar. Finish off by quickly pouring in the cooled coffee. Place in the oven at 180°C (355°F) for 30-35 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve the cake cut into slices, completing the dish with the coffee cream formed on the bottom of the oven dish. To change the dessert’s presentation you can cook the mixture in single-portion moulds, to obtain small cocoa and coffee cake muffins. In this case reduce the cooking time to 20-25 minutes. Yields 4 servings.

Do you feel intimidated against megabrands such as Starbucks? Don’t be. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, a new study recently found that Starbucks don’t kill local coffee shop business, it actually increases sales:
The study, which was published in the Journal of Marketing Research, found that when a bookstore advertised that its “main competitors are large multi-billion dollar corporations,” people were more likely to buy books and to spend more money on them than if no competitor was mentioned. And when the participants were offered $1 or a chocolate bar as compensation for being in the study, they opted for the chocolate when they thought it was facing a challenge from a larger candy company.
The study also suggests that coffee shops that are closer to Starbucks tend to have higher reviews on Yelp. The researchers found that when people reviewing a Peet’s Coffee & Tea store mentioned Starbucks more often, the overall rating of the Peet’s store increased.

James Freeman’s Blue Bottle Coffee is the latest craze in artisanal coffee. People are loving the coffee from this Oakland-based company which is expanding fast – currently, there are 13 stores in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and now in New York City. Freeman’s company was born as he describes from:
…a slightly disaffected freelance musician and coffee lunatic, weary of the grande eggnog latte and the double skim pumpkin-pie macchiato, decided to open a roaster for people who were clamoring for the actual taste of freshly roasted coffee. Using a miniscule six-pound batch roaster, he made an historic vow: “I will only sell coffee less than 48 hours out of the roaster to my customers, so they may enjoy coffee at its peak of flavor. I will only use the finest, most delicious and responsibly sourced beans.” In honor of Kolshitsky’s heroics, he named his business Blue Bottle Coffee, and began another chapter in the history of superlative coffee. Blue Bottle Coffee has grown to a small network of cafes, wholesale partners, an espresso cart, and some vintage German coffee roasters. We are still united by the simple purpose of getting great coffee to everyone who asks for it. Improbably and delightfully, there are hundreds of us now. We roast coffee on vintage gear, put it in compostable bags, and still get it to our customers within 48 hours. We roast great coffee on two coasts, make great drinks, clean up after ourselves, bake cookies, type up invoices, get change at the bank, and say please and thank you.
